Tpharmaceu cal industry can be broadly
divided into four stages. From late 19th century to

1970 is considered as the first stage of the pharma

industry. At that me, the Indian market was
dominated by foreign companies. The second stage

covers 1970 to 1990 when several domes c

companies to launch opera ons in foreign countries.

By the mid 1990's, India became one of the largest

producers of Sulfa drugs, An -Malarial, An bio cs,
An -Helmen cs, An -TB, Paracetamol, etc, globally.

From 2010 onwards, the Indian pharmaceu cal sector

has consolidated itself and presently, the industry
supplies high-quality generic drugs to approximately

+200 countries. Valued at US $50 billion, the Indian

pharmaceu cal industry ranks 3rd in the world in

terms of produc on by volume, and 13th by value.
